Face & Tinted SPF

The best sunscreen for your face

The formula you wear every day beats the one you admire in a cabinet. Picks by skin type and finish.

Our overall mineral pick is [CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50](#ceraveMineral) — mineral actives with ceramides and hyaluronic acid in the base, fragrance-free, at drugstore prices. It is the face formula that suits the largest number of people without asking them to compromise on comfort or budget.

Face sunscreen is the hardest sunscreen to get right, because the requirement is contradictory: enough filter to protect, and little enough visible residue that you put it on every morning without thinking about it. This page picks by skin type, because that is what actually decides whether a product survives past week two.

Pick in this order

  1. Finish, matched to your skin type. Demi-matte for oily, dewy for dry. This decides whether you keep using it.
  2. Tinted or untinted. If white cast bothers you at all, go tinted and skip the trial and error. Tinted versus untinted.
  3. Fragrance-free if your skin is reactive. Fragrance causes more sunscreen reactions than the filters do.
  4. Water resistance if you exercise. Many elegant face formulas carry no claim at all.
  5. Then the SPF number. It matters, but it is the fifth decision — the highest SPF you never reapply loses to the SPF 30 you actually wear.

Our picks in detail

01 · Best overall mineral

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Face

CeraVe · Read our CeraVe review

Mineral actives in a base that genuinely supports the skin barrier, fragrance-free and priced so that using the full amount is realistic. The face SPF that suits the widest range of people.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with ceramides and hyaluronic acid
SPF:
SPF 50
Water resistance:
40 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Most skin types, and dry skin in particular

What works

  • Ceramides and hyaluronic acid do real work in the base
  • Fragrance-free and widely available
  • Mineral-only actives

The trade-off

  • Visible cast on medium and deep tones
  • 40 minutes of water resistance

02 · Best for acne-prone skin

Lightweight face sunscreen tube beside a mirror

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

EltaMD · Read our EltaMD review

A hybrid rather than a mineral — zinc alongside octinoxate, with 5% niacinamide in the base. It is the formula most often recommended for acne-prone facial skin, and it disappears completely.

Actives:
Zinc oxide with octinoxate; EltaMD lists 9% zinc oxide and 5% niacinamide
SPF:
SPF 46
Water resistance:
Not labeled water resistant
Reef status:
Contains octinoxate, which Hawaii and Key West restrict
Best for:
Oily, acne-prone or rosacea-prone skin that reacts to heavy formulas

What works

  • Weightless, which means people actually reapply it
  • Niacinamide suits acne-prone and reactive skin
  • No cast at all

The trade-off

  • Contains octinoxate, so it is restricted in Hawaii and Key West
  • Not water resistant — wrong for swimming or sport

03 · Best tinted

Tinted mineral sunscreen swatched on the back of a hand

EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 41

EltaMD · Read our EltaMD review

Mineral filters under an iron-oxide tint, with 40 minutes of water resistance — mineral protection in a finish that reads as skin, plus visible-light protection the filters do not provide.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, tinted with iron oxides
SPF:
SPF 41
Water resistance:
40 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Anyone who wants mineral protection with no visible product

What works

  • Tint cancels the cast entirely
  • Water resistant, unlike most elegant face formulas
  • Visible-light protection from the iron oxides

The trade-off

  • One universal tint
  • Dermatology-counter pricing

04 · Best for oily skin

Pharmacy mineral face sunscreen tube on a white shelf

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 Face Sunscreen

La Roche-Posay

A titanium-led formula with a dry, matte-leaning finish and antioxidants in the base — the mineral option that does not add to the shine problem.

Actives:
Titanium dioxide with antioxidants
SPF:
SPF 50
Water resistance:
40 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Skin that turns shiny by midday under most SPF

What works

  • Dry finish that suits oily and combination skin
  • Antioxidants in the base
  • Fragrance-free

The trade-off

  • 40 minutes of water resistance
  • Visible on medium to deep tones

05 · Best for sport

Mineral face sunscreen tube on a bathroom shelf

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 30+

Blue Lizard · Read our Blue Lizard review

A mineral face formula from a range built around water resistance — the one to reach for when a beautifully elegant, non-water-resistant daily SPF is the wrong tool.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
SPF:
SPF 30+
Water resistance:
40 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Running, cycling and anything that involves sweating

What works

  • Water resistant, unlike most face-specific formulas
  • Mineral actives shared with the brand's body range
  • Does not sting when you sweat

The trade-off

  • Heavier than a daily-wear formula
  • Noticeable cast

06 · Best zinc-only for face

Dermatology-counter mineral sunscreen tube on a clean surface

ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

ISDIN

Zinc as the sole active in a genuinely light facial base — the rare zinc-only face product that does not feel like a body sunscreen applied to the wrong place.

Actives:
Zinc oxide as the sole active filter
SPF:
SPF 50+
Water resistance:
Not labeled water resistant
Reef status:
Zinc only
Best for:
Skin with a history of sun damage

What works

  • Zinc-only actives in a light base
  • Very light finish for a single-filter mineral
  • Fragrance-free

The trade-off

  • Not labeled water resistant
  • Dermatology-counter pricing

By skin type

Oily and acne-prone

Look for demi-matte or matte finishes and avoid heavy occlusive bases. Niacinamide in the formula is a genuine plus for acne-prone skin. A titanium-forward mineral gives a drier finish than a zinc-heavy one, which is why several face formulas lean that way. Zinc oxide versus titanium dioxide.

Dry and mature

Ceramides, hyaluronic acid or a straightforwardly moisturizing base. Matte finishes cling to texture and make fine lines more visible, which is the most common complaint about mineral SPF on mature skin — and it is a finish problem, not a filter problem.

Sensitive and reactive

Fragrance-free, short ingredient list, mineral actives. Skip natural-positioned products loaded with botanical extracts, which are a common trigger. Our sensitive-skin face picks go further on this.

Deeper skin tones

Go tinted from the start. An untinted mineral leaves a gray film on deep skin regardless of how sheer the base is, and sheerness does not solve it. Tinted picks for deeper skin tones.

The amount problem

Most people apply roughly a quarter to a half of the amount used in SPF testing, and on the face the shortfall is worse than elsewhere because people are trying to avoid a visible layer. The reference dose is about a quarter teaspoon for face and neck — the two-finger measure. Under-applying SPF 50 does not give you SPF 50 at a discount; it gives you a substantially lower number. How much sunscreen to apply.

Where it goes in your routine

Sunscreen is the last skincare step and goes on before makeup. Moisturizer, wait a minute, then SPF, then makeup. Applying mineral SPF onto a still-wet moisturizer dilutes it and causes the patchiness and pilling people blame on the sunscreen. Sunscreen order in your routine.

Do you need it indoors?

UVA passes through ordinary window glass while UVB is largely blocked, so people who sit near windows or drive regularly do accumulate UVA exposure indoors. That is why daily facial SPF is commonly recommended even for people who are not outdoors much. What broad spectrum means explains which part gets through.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sunscreen for your face?

The one you will wear every day. For most people that is a mineral formula with a base matched to their skin type — CeraVe's mineral face SPF for dry or normal skin, a titanium-forward formula for oily skin, and a tinted one if white cast is the obstacle.

How much sunscreen should I use on my face?

About a quarter teaspoon for face and neck, commonly described as the two-finger measure — two strips of product along the length of your index and middle fingers.

Should sunscreen go before or after moisturizer?

After. Moisturizer first, let it settle for a minute, then sunscreen, then makeup. Applying SPF onto wet moisturizer dilutes it and causes the patchiness and pilling usually blamed on the sunscreen.

Do I need face sunscreen indoors?

UVA passes through ordinary window glass while UVB is largely blocked, so people who sit near windows or drive regularly accumulate UVA exposure indoors. Daily facial SPF is commonly recommended for that reason.

Is mineral or chemical sunscreen better for the face?

Both protect to their labeled SPF. Mineral suits reactive, rosacea-prone and sensitive skin and is the choice where reef restrictions apply. Chemical and hybrid formulas are usually more cosmetically invisible, which matters on a face because it decides whether you wear it.
