The best sunscreen for men

There is no male skin biology that needs its own filter. What there is: a strong preference for formats that go on fast and leave nothing behind.

Disclosure: Spf & Shore earns commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we recommend. Read the full disclosure.

Our overall pick is Thinksport SPF 50+: 20% non-nano zinc oxide, SPF 50+, the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance, in a tube large enough to apply a real ounce. For a face you will actually wear it on daily, EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 is the lighter answer.

Nothing about male skin requires a different filter. What does differ, consistently, is behavior: men apply less, apply it later, reapply almost never, and abandon anything that feels like a cosmetic. So the useful question is not which sunscreen is best for men but which one survives contact with those habits — which pushes the answer toward sticks, sprays, matte finishes and, more than anything, clothing.

Why this matters more for men than the marketing suggests

Melanoma incidence and mortality are both higher in men than in women in the United States, and the gap widens with age. Part of that is exposure — more cumulative outdoor work and sport — and part is detection, since the common male sites include the back and the back of the neck, which nobody checks. The American Academy of Dermatology's prevention guidance is the same for everyone: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day, plus shade and clothing. The practical difference is where the gaps are: scalp, ears, the back of the neck and the tops of the hands.

If your hair is thinning or you keep it short, the scalp moves to the top of the list — it is the one area where a hat genuinely outperforms anything you can apply. Sun protection for hair and scalp covers it.

What we looked for

  • A dry, non-shiny finish, because a greasy face is the most common reason a daily sunscreen gets dropped.
  • Speed over a large area — arms, shoulders, neck, legs — without ten minutes of rubbing.
  • 80 minutes of water resistance on anything meant for sweat or water.
  • A format that can be reapplied in a truck or at a sideline, which in practice means a stick.
  • Fragrance-free where possible, since shaved skin reacts more. Our methodology.

The face problem, specifically

The complaint is almost always the same: it stings the eyes when you sweat, or it leaves a sheen. Both are solvable. Sting usually comes from chemical filters migrating in sweat, so a mineral or mostly-mineral facial formula helps, and a stick applied along the brow line and temples helps more because it does not run. Sheen is a base problem rather than a filter problem — a matte-finishing facial sunscreen fixes it where a body lotion never will.

If you shave, apply after the skin has settled rather than straight onto freshly shaved skin, and choose fragrance-free. Sunscreen that does not sting eyes was written for children and applies exactly as well to a sweating adult.

A realistic routine

  1. Morning: a facial formula on face, ears and the back of the neck. That is the whole daily job in about fifteen seconds.
  2. Before going outside for the day: an ounce of SPF 50 on everything the clothes do not cover.
  3. In the bag: a stick. It is the only thing that gets used at the two-hour mark.
  4. On the water or in heat: reapply after toweling off, which ends water resistance whatever the label said.
  5. Wear the shirt. A UPF 50+ hoodie removes arms, shoulders, torso and neck from the job for as long as it is on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sunscreen for men?

Thinksport SPF 50+ for a body — 20% non-nano zinc oxide, SPF 50+ and 80 minutes of water resistance — and EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 for a face, because its finish is light enough that a daily habit survives.

Is there a difference between men's and women's sunscreen?

Not in the filters. The differences are packaging, scent and finish. Buy on the actives panel, the SPF, the broad-spectrum claim and the water-resistance minutes, and ignore which aisle it was in.

What sunscreen does not sting your eyes when you sweat?

Mineral facial formulas and sticks. Sting usually comes from chemical filters migrating in sweat, and a stick applied along the brow and temples stays where it is put instead of running.

Do men need sunscreen on a scalp?

Yes if hair is thinning or cropped, and it is one of the few places a hat clearly beats sunscreen. A spray or a stick along the part line works when a hat is not practical.

How much sunscreen does an adult man need?

About an ounce for a full body, which is roughly a shot glass, and a nickel-sized amount for a face and neck. Most people apply a quarter to a half of that, which is why SPF 50 is the sensible floor.
