Sun Bum mineral sunscreen review
A surf brand whose best products are the ones it markets least. The mineral line, read off the panel rather than the packaging.

Sun Bum is not a mineral brand. It is a large chemical-sunscreen brand with a mineral line inside it, and the distinction matters because the packaging does not make it for you. The Original range — the one stacked at every checkout — runs on chemical filters. The Mineral range is a separate, smaller line built on non-nano zinc, and it is the only part of the brand this review covers.
Read as a zinc line, it is genuinely good: SPF 50, the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance, fragrance-free body lotion, a baby formula, and the cheapest zinc lip balm worth owning. The honest cost is texture and cast — this is a thick, visible mineral range at a price that reflects a drugstore brand rather than a dermatology counter.

What Sun Bum actually makes
The brand splits into lines that look alike on a shelf and do not behave alike on skin:
- Original — chemical filters, the lightest textures, the biggest shelf presence. Not covered here.
- Mineral — non-nano zinc, SPF 30 and SPF 50, lotion, stick, spray and lip balm.
- Baby Bum — the mineral formula for infants and toddlers, fragrance-free.
- Lip care — both filter systems, sold side by side in the same rack, which is exactly where people get caught out.
The practical consequence is that the brand name tells you nothing about what is protecting you. Two tubes with the same logo, the same typeface and the same yellow can be a zinc sunscreen and an avobenzone sunscreen. How to read a sunscreen label is thirty seconds of work that settles it, and with this brand it is not optional.
The part that is independently verified
Sun Bum's mineral lotion carries the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation, and it appears in the directory at two tiers: the Active seal at SPF 50 and the Daily Use seal at SPF 30. That is a useful illustration of how the program works — the seal follows the formula, not the brand, and one line can hold different tiers at different strengths.
It is worth being precise about what that seal is and is not. It is a submission-based program with published criteria that the Foundation's photobiology committee reviews; it is not a head-to-head test ranking this product against others, and it is not an SPF audit of the specific tube you bought. We cite it because it is independent and checkable, not because it settles the question.

Who each one suits
| If you are… | Take | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Buying one zinc bottle for the family | Mineral SPF 50 Lotion | SPF 50, 80 minutes of water resistance, fragrance-free, and the seal at the Active tier |
| Buying for a baby over six months | Baby Bum Mineral SPF 50 | The same mineral approach, fragrance-free, in a formula aimed at infant skin |
| Protecting lips on the water | Mineral SPF 30 Lip Balm | Zinc oxide 8% with 80 minutes of water resistance, for the price of a coffee |
| Looking for something invisible on deep skin | Not this brand | The mineral range is visible — a tinted mineral solves it, and Sun Bum has no tinted mineral face option |
Honest limitations
Every brand has them, and a review without this section is an advertisement. Sun Bum's mineral line has four:
- The brand is mostly chemical. Buying Sun Bum does not mean buying zinc. The Original line outsells the Mineral line and sits beside it on the same shelf, in near-identical packaging.
- It is a visible mineral range. Thick, white going on, and it stays faintly white on medium and deep skin. Why mineral sunscreen leaves a white cast explains why that is physics rather than a formulation failure, but it is still the main reason people stop using it.
- Stock is inconsistent. The mineral face stick was out of stock on the brand's own store when we last checked, and the mineral lip balm has moved in and out of stock this season. The products are real and widely sold elsewhere; the brand store is not a reliable buy point for the mineral line specifically.
- There is no tinted mineral face product. The range solves the white-cast problem with nothing at all, which leaves anyone with a deeper skin tone buying a different brand for their face.
A fifth point is not a limitation so much as a caution: the mineral line is scented in most variants, and the one place that matters is lips, where a flavored balm invites licking. The Baby Bum formula is the fragrance-free one.
How it compares
Against Thinkbaby and Thinksport: Think runs a higher zinc load and spreads more easily, and its whole range is mineral so there is no line to confuse. Sun Bum wins on price and on how many shops stock it.
Against Blue Lizard: Blue Lizard's core range is coherently mineral across baby, kids, sensitive and face, with the UV-indicating cap as a genuine nudge for children. Sun Bum is cheaper and easier to find; Blue Lizard is the one to standardize a household on.
Against Badger: Badger publishes its concentrations and runs the shortest ingredient list in the category, at 40 minutes of water resistance rather than 80. For a swimming day, Sun Bum. For the most minimal label, Badger.
Against CeraVe: CeraVe is the better face product, because the ceramide base was built for daily facial wear. Sun Bum is the better beach and water product, and considerably cheaper per ounce.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sun Bum a mineral sunscreen?
Only part of it. The Mineral and Baby Bum lines are built on non-nano zinc; the Original line, which is much larger, uses chemical filters. The packaging is similar enough that the actives panel is the only reliable way to tell them apart.
Is Sun Bum reef safe?
The mineral line uses zinc without oxybenzone or octinoxate, which satisfies every current reef-protection law including Hawaii's. The Original chemical line is a separate question — check the panel, because reef safe has no legal definition.
Is Sun Bum good for sensitive skin?
The mineral lotion is fragrance-free and zinc-based, which is the right starting point. If your skin reacts to most things, a stripped-back brand with a shorter ingredient list is a safer first try.
Does Sun Bum mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?
Yes. It is a visible zinc range and the cast is obvious on medium and deep skin tones. There is no tinted mineral option in the line, so if cast is your obstacle this is not the brand that solves it.
Is Sun Bum worth the price?
For the mineral lotion and the mineral lip balm, yes — both sit at the bottom of the price range for what they are, and a sunscreen you apply generously beats an elegant one you ration.
