Mineral Sunscreen

The best mineral sunscreens

Zinc-only formulas that earn their place, chosen on the actives panel rather than the front of the bottle.

A mineral sunscreen is any sunscreen whose only active filters are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. The best ones deliver that protection in a texture you will actually keep using — which is the whole game, because an unused SPF 50 protects nothing. Our overall pick is [Thinksport SPF 50+](#thinksport): 20% non-nano zinc oxide, the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance US labels may claim, and a texture that spreads without the chalk of older zinc formulas.

Below are the mineral formulas we recommend across the situations people actually buy for: a family beach day, a face you want to look normal, reactive skin, and a bottle that has to live in a bag all summer. Every pick is chosen on published label facts — actives, SPF, water-resistance minutes — and every one has a named trade-off, because all of them do.

How we chose these

We read the drug facts panel and the full ingredient list on each product, compared active filters and labeled water-resistance times, and weighed those against what a specific buyer needs. Where an independent organization has run laboratory testing — Consumer Reports verifies label SPF across a large sample each year — we cite them by name. We do not run a lab and we do not wear-test products, and you will not find a star rating on this page for that reason. Our methodology is published in full.

Three things disqualified a product outright: no published actives, discontinued or unavailable, or a marketing claim we could not verify against the label.

Our picks in detail

01 · Best overall

Sport mineral sunscreen bottle beside hiking gear

Thinksport Sunscreen SPF 50+

Thinksport · Read our Thinksport review

A 20% non-nano zinc formula with the maximum 80 minutes of labeled water resistance, in a base that spreads without the chalkiness older zinc-only sunscreens were known for. If you buy one mineral sunscreen for a family, buy this one in the large size.

Actives:
20% non-nano zinc oxide
SPF:
SPF 50+
Water resistance:
80 minutes
Reef status:
Zinc only — no oxybenzone, octinoxate or octocrylene
Best for:
Long days outdoors where reapplication is unreliable

What works

  • Highest water-resistance rating US labels permit
  • Zinc-only actives, so it satisfies every current reef-protection law
  • Sold in large tubes, which makes applying enough of it realistic

The trade-off

  • Still leaves a visible cast, particularly on deeper skin tones
  • Thicker than a face-first formula and can pill under makeup

02 · Best for a whole family

Mineral sunscreen bottle for sensitive skin beside a beach hat

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

Blue Lizard · Read our Blue Lizard review

The Sensitive formula pairs zinc oxide with titanium dioxide and holds 80 minutes of water resistance, and the range runs from baby to face to stick on the same filter system — so a family can standardize on one brand without compromising on any single member.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
SPF:
SPF 50+
Water resistance:
80 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only; the Sensitive formula omits oxybenzone and octinoxate
Best for:
One bottle that works for adults, kids and reactive skin

What works

  • Consistent filter system across baby, kids, face and stick variants
  • 80-minute water resistance
  • Widely stocked, so replacing it mid-trip is easy

The trade-off

  • Can be difficult to rub in when reapplying over already-damp skin
  • Not the most cosmetically elegant option for daily face use

03 · Best mineral for face

Drugstore mineral face sunscreen tube on a counter

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Face

CeraVe · Read our CeraVe review

Ceramides and hyaluronic acid in the base make this one of the few untinted mineral face formulas that does not sit on dry skin like a crust, and it is sold at drugstore prices rather than dermatology-counter ones.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with ceramides and hyaluronic acid
SPF:
SPF 50
Water resistance:
40 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Dry or barrier-compromised skin that finds most mineral SPF drying

What works

  • Genuine skincare benefit in the base, not just filler
  • Fragrance-free and widely available
  • Mineral-only actives

The trade-off

  • Visible cast on medium and deep skin tones
  • 40 minutes of water resistance, so not a swimming choice

04 · Best for sensitive and reactive skin

Fragrance-free mineral sunscreen tube on a plain surface

Vanicream Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ for Sensitive Skin

Vanicream · Read our Vanicream review

Built around the shortest realistic allergen list in this group — no fragrance, no dyes, no botanical extracts — with mineral-only actives and 80 minutes of water resistance. It is the first thing to try when something else has caused a reaction.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
SPF:
SPF 50+
Water resistance:
80 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Skin that has reacted to sunscreen before

What works

  • Fragrance-free with a deliberately short ingredient list
  • 80-minute water resistance despite the gentle formulation
  • Made by a brand built specifically around sensitive skin

The trade-off

  • Thick, and takes real effort to spread
  • Clear cast on application that needs working in

05 · Best minimal formula

Clear zinc mineral sunscreen tube resting on sand

Badger Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF 40

Badger · Read our Badger review

About as short as a sunscreen ingredient list gets, built on non-nano zinc oxide in a simple base. It is the honest choice if a short label matters to you more than cosmetic elegance, and it does not pretend otherwise.

Actives:
Non-nano zinc oxide
SPF:
SPF 40
Water resistance:
40 minutes
Reef status:
Zinc only
Best for:
Buyers who want the fewest possible ingredients

What works

  • Very short ingredient list with non-nano zinc
  • No fragrance in the unscented version
  • Brand publishes its zinc concentration, which many do not

The trade-off

  • Applies thick and leaves an obvious white cast
  • 40 minutes of water resistance, half the maximum

06 · Best value

Botanical mineral sunscreen bottle in bright daylight

Australian Gold Botanical Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Australian Gold · Read our Australian Gold review

A full mineral filter system with 80 minutes of water resistance at a price that makes using the correct amount realistic — which matters more to real-world protection than any premium formulation detail.

Actives:
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
SPF:
SPF 50
Water resistance:
80 minutes
Reef status:
Mineral filters only
Best for:
Covering a family without rationing the bottle

What works

  • 80-minute water resistance
  • Priced so that applying a full ounce does not feel wasteful
  • Tinted face BB cream available in the same line

The trade-off

  • Scented, which rules it out for fragrance-sensitive skin
  • Cast is noticeable on application

What actually separates a good mineral sunscreen from a bad one

Not the SPF number. Every product above meets its labeled SPF under FDA testing conditions, and the gap between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is smaller than most people assume. What separates them is three things you can read off the label and one you cannot.

1. Zinc oxide load and whether titanium dioxide is along for the ride

Zinc oxide covers a broader UVA range on its own than titanium dioxide does, which is why zinc-only products can usually claim broad spectrum without help. Titanium dioxide is whiter but often feels lighter, so many formulas combine the two to balance texture against cast. Zinc oxide versus titanium dioxide works through which does what.

2. Water resistance, which only comes in two numbers

US labels may claim 40 minutes or 80 minutes of water resistance and nothing else. Waterproof and sweatproof were banned outright in 2012. If a product will be worn swimming, 80 is the number to look for — and the clock still starts the moment you get in the water, so it is a ceiling and not a promise. Water-resistant sunscreen explained covers the detail.

3. What is in the base, not just the actives

Most sunscreen reactions are not caused by the filters. They are caused by fragrance, essential oils and botanical extracts in the base. For reactive skin, a short ingredient list and no fragrance matters more than the specific zinc percentage.

4. Whether you will actually use it

This is the one you cannot read off a label, and it decides everything. A thick zinc paste that you ration because it is unpleasant gives you less protection than a lighter formula you apply generously. Buy the largest tube of the formula you like the feel of, and use the full amount.

The white cast question

Every product on this page leaves some degree of visible residue, because zinc oxide is white and that is a property of the mineral rather than a formulation failure. How visible depends on the zinc load, the particle size, the base, and your skin tone. On deep skin tones, untinted mineral sunscreen is frequently unwearable, and no amount of rubbing fixes it.

If that describes you, do not work through untinted formulas hoping one will disappear. Go straight to tinted mineral sunscreen, where iron oxides cancel the whiteness optically — and add protection against visible light that the UV filters do not provide. For the mechanism, see why mineral sunscreen leaves a white cast.

Do you need mineral at all?

Honestly, not always. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, water resistant, applied generously — without insisting on a filter type. A correctly applied chemical sunscreen protects skin as well as a correctly applied mineral one.

People choose mineral for reasons that sit alongside efficacy rather than replacing it: young children, reactive or rosacea-prone skin, reef-protection laws at their destination, and a preference for filters that are not meaningfully absorbed. Those are all good reasons. Mineral versus chemical sunscreen is the honest comparison, including where chemical filters genuinely win.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mineral sunscreen?

For most people buying one bottle, a 20% non-nano zinc oxide formula with 80 minutes of water resistance, in the largest size you will use. Thinksport SPF 50+ is our overall pick on those criteria. For face use, a ceramide-containing formula such as CeraVe's mineral face SPF is more wearable day to day.

Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical sunscreen?

Not in raw protective terms — both meet the same FDA standard for their labeled SPF. Mineral is usually preferred for young children, reactive skin, and destinations with reef-protection laws, because zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on the skin rather than being absorbed.

Does mineral sunscreen work right away?

Yes. Mineral filters work at the surface, so protection begins as soon as you have spread an even layer. Chemical filters are conventionally given 15 to 30 minutes to settle before exposure.

What mineral sunscreens are reef safe?

Any sunscreen whose only actives are zinc oxide or titanium dioxide satisfies every current reef-protection law, including Hawaii's. Reef safe has no legal definition in the United States, so read the Drug Facts panel rather than the front of the bottle.

How much mineral sunscreen should I apply?

About one ounce — a shot glass — for full body coverage, and a quarter teaspoon for face and neck. Most people apply between a quarter and a half of the tested amount, which is the single biggest reason real-world protection falls short of the labeled SPF.
