The best sunscreen brands

Nobody is the best at everything. Here is what each brand worth buying is genuinely good at, read off its own labels.

Disclosure: Spf & Shore earns commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we recommend. Read the full disclosure.

If you want one brand to default to, make it Thinksport and Thinkbaby: a mineral-only range at 20% non-nano zinc oxide, SPF 50+, 80 minutes of water resistance, in tubes big enough to apply properly. One household, one brand, adults and children covered.

Brand loyalty is a weak strategy in sun care, because the actives panel varies more between two products from the same brand than between two brands. What a brand is genuinely good for is a *range* — a consistent filter philosophy, a texture family and a price band. That is what this page compares.

What makes a sunscreen brand worth trusting

Three things, none of which is advertising spend. First, a filter philosophy you can see on every label — a mineral-only brand that never quietly slips octinoxate into its face line is easier to buy from. Second, published concentrations, because a brand that prints 20% non-nano zinc oxide is telling you something a brand listing only *zinc oxide* is not. Third, honest water-resistance claims: 40 and 80 minutes are the only two numbers a US label may carry, and a brand claiming anything beyond them has disqualified itself.

What should not move you: the words *natural*, *clean* and *reef safe*, none of which any regulator defines. What natural sunscreen means and what reef-safe actually means cover both phrases.

What we looked for

  • A coherent range, not one good product surrounded by weaker ones.
  • Published actives and, where available, concentrations on US labels.
  • Fragrance-free options in the line, because fragrance is the single most common reason a sunscreen is abandoned.
  • Availability, because the best brand is useless if you cannot replace a lost bottle.
  • A price band that lets you use enough. Our methodology.

Brands we did not pick, and why

Several very large sunscreen brands make one excellent mineral product inside a range that is mostly chemical — which is fine if you buy carefully and unhelpful as a default. Others sell through dermatology channels at prices that quietly discourage using a full ounce, which is the one habit that matters more than the brand. And a brand's past recall history is worth knowing: the 2021 benzene-contamination recall of several aerosol sunscreens was a manufacturing problem, not a filter problem, but it is a reason to prefer brands that publish and act quickly.

We also skip anything whose marketing leans on *chemical-free*, because every sunscreen is made of chemicals and zinc oxide is one of them. Mineral versus chemical sunscreen sets out the real distinction.

How to pick a brand for your situation

  1. A whole family, in and out of water: Thinksport or Thinkbaby, or Blue Lizard Sensitive. Both carry 80 minutes and mineral filters throughout.
  2. Reactive or eczema-prone skin: Vanicream or Badger. The shortest inactive lists in the group. The best sunscreen for sensitive skin.
  3. A daily face formula at a drugstore price: CeraVe. Mineral filters in a ceramide base, stocked everywhere.
  4. An oily or acne-prone face: EltaMD UV Clear, accepting that it is a hybrid formula containing octinoxate.
  5. A brand you can replace anywhere: CeraVe, Coppertone or Neutrogena — the mineral entries in each line, read off the panel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sunscreen brand?

For a household default, Thinksport and Thinkbaby — a mineral-only range at 20% non-nano zinc oxide, SPF 50+ and 80 minutes of water resistance, with matching adult and child formulas.

Are expensive sunscreen brands better?

Not reliably. Price mostly buys texture and finish, which matters for a face you wear it on daily. It does not buy more UV protection than a drugstore mineral at the same SPF and water-resistance claim — and an expensive bottle you ration is worse than a cheap one you use properly.

Which sunscreen brands are mineral only?

Among the brands here, Thinksport and Thinkbaby, Badger and Vanicream are mineral throughout. Blue Lizard's Sensitive line is mineral only but not every Blue Lizard product is. Always read the actives panel rather than the brand.

What sunscreen brand do dermatologists recommend?

EltaMD and CeraVe appear most often at dermatology counters, largely on texture and tolerance rather than on filter chemistry. Our page on dermatologist-recommended sunscreens covers what that phrase does and does not mean.

Does the brand matter more than the SPF?

No. The actives panel, the SPF, the broad-spectrum claim and the water-resistance minutes decide the protection. A brand is a shortcut to a filter philosophy and a texture family, which is useful, but it is not a substitute for reading the label.
