Face & Tinted SPF

The best sunscreen for oily skin

The filter is almost never the problem. The base is — so these are chosen on finish, not on chemistry.

Our overall pick is EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46: the lightest finish here, with 5% niacinamide in the base and a texture that genuinely disappears on oily skin. If you want mineral filters only, Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen SPF 30 is the sheerest alternative.

The complaint about sunscreen on oily skin is almost always about the base rather than the filters. Zinc oxide is a dry powder and titanium dioxide is drier still; what makes a sunscreen feel greasy is the emollients and oils carrying them. So the useful filter for this problem is not mineral versus chemical — it is how much oil is in the formula and whether anything in it absorbs shine.

Why sunscreen feels greasy, and what to look for instead

Sunscreen filters have to be dissolved or dispersed in something, and the cheapest, most reliable carriers are oils and silicone-free emollients. Those are what sit on an oily skin surface and read as shine an hour later. A formula built for oily skin swaps some of that for film-formers and absorbents — silica, dimethicone, sometimes a little alcohol — which is why it feels dry going on.

Two things genuinely help beyond the base. Niacinamide, which several facial sunscreens include, is associated with reduced sebum output in cosmetic use, and it is one reason EltaMD UV Clear has the reputation it does on oily and acne-prone skin. And a loose mineral powder worn over the top absorbs oil directly while adding its own SPF — the only reapplication method that does not make shine worse.

What does not help: skipping sunscreen because your skin is oily. Oiliness is not protection, and several common acne treatments make skin burn faster. The best sunscreen for acne-prone skin covers the treatment interaction.

What we looked for

  • A dry or matte finish at a full facial dose, not just in a thin test smear.
  • No fragrance, which is the most common irritant in facial formulas and does nothing for oil control.
  • A base that does more than carry the filter — niacinamide, silica or a powder format.
  • Broad spectrum at SPF 30 minimum, with SPF 46 or 50 preferred for daily wear.
  • A format that can be reapplied over makeup at midday. Our methodology.

Is mineral or chemical better for oily skin?

Neither, as a category. The best-regarded facial sunscreens for oily skin include both, and the deciding variable is the base. What is true is that high-percentage zinc lotions built for bodies — the 20% and 24% formulas — are thick, emollient and the worst choice for an oily face, which is where the belief that mineral sunscreen is greasy comes from. A low-percentage mineral in a sheer base behaves completely differently.

If you want mineral only, accept SPF 30 or shop the dermatology counter, because that is where the sheer high-SPF mineral formulas live. Mineral versus chemical sunscreen sets out the trade-offs honestly.

Controlling shine through the day

  1. Skip the heavy moisturizer underneath. A sheer sunscreen on bare, clean skin is often all the hydration an oily face needs in summer.
  2. Apply a nickel-sized amount in two thin layers rather than one thick one. Thick layers slide.
  3. Blot, do not wash. Washing mid-day strips the film and prompts more oil.
  4. Reapply with a powder SPF, which adds protection and absorbs oil in the same pass. Powder versus lotion face sunscreen.
  5. Use a stick for a hairline and temples, where lotion plus sweat is what makes sunscreen sting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sunscreen for oily skin?

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 — the lightest finish here, with 9% zinc oxide and 5% niacinamide in the base. For mineral filters only, Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen SPF 30 is the sheerest alternative.

Does sunscreen make oily skin worse?

A heavy one does. The shine comes from the oils and emollients carrying the filters, not from the filters themselves, so a sheer facial formula behaves completely differently from a thick body lotion on the same skin.

Is mineral sunscreen bad for oily skin?

No, but high-percentage mineral body lotions are. Zinc oxide is a dry powder; what makes those formulas greasy is the emollient base. A low-percentage mineral in a sheer base is one of the better options for oily skin.

How do you reapply sunscreen on oily skin without looking greasy?

With a loose mineral powder SPF. It adds protection and absorbs oil in the same pass, which is the one thing a lotion cannot do, and it goes over makeup without disturbing it.

Do I need moisturizer under sunscreen if my skin is oily?

Often not in summer. A sheer facial sunscreen on clean skin provides enough hydration for many oily skin types, and skipping the extra layer removes a source of shine.
