Why not sunscreen
Three reasons, none of them about sunscreen being unsafe.
- The guidance puts it last for infants. Under six months it is for exposed skin when shade is unavailable, not a routine daily product.
- Skin reactions are unpredictable. New parents are advised to patch test, and a bottle chosen by someone else is a bottle they will patch test cautiously and probably not use.
- Everyone gives it. Sunscreen is the obvious present, which is precisely why it is not the useful one.

What new parents actually run into
- A stroller hood is not enough shade. It blocks direct sun from above and does nothing about UV reflected up off sand, water or pavement. A full canopy does.
- Never drape a blanket over a stroller. It restricts airflow and can raise the internal temperature dangerously. Heat is a separate risk from UV and needs its own answer.
- A hat without a chin strap will be removed. Immediately, and repeatedly. The strap is not a nice-to-have.
- Cotton is not sun protection. A white cotton babygro is around UPF 5 to 7, and less when wet. How UPF clothing works.
- Babies outgrow everything in a season. Buying one size ahead is genuinely useful here in a way it is not for rash guard fit on older children.

A gift that costs nothing
Tell them the timing rule: UV is strongest roughly between 10am and 4pm, and a walk at 8am or 5pm needs far less of everything. New parents are given a great deal of equipment and comparatively little practical information, and that one is worth more than most of the equipment.
