The best SPF 50 sunscreens

SPF 50 is not twice the protection of SPF 25 — it is insurance against applying too little, which almost everyone does.

Our overall pick is Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral SPF 50+: mineral filters only, fragrance-free, and the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance a US label may claim. It is the SPF 50 bottle to buy if you want one that suits a whole household, faces included, without a reactive-skin gamble.

The case for SPF 50 over SPF 30 is not the small difference in UVB filtered at the tested dose. It is that nobody applies the tested dose. Real-world application is routinely a quarter to a half of the two milligrams per square centimeter SPF is measured at, and protection falls faster than the amount skipped — so the higher label number is the cheapest way to buy back the margin you lose by under-applying.

What SPF 50 actually means

SPF is a ratio measured against UVB. Applied at the test dose, an SPF 30 lets through roughly one part in thirty of the UVB that would otherwise reach skin, and an SPF 50 roughly one part in fifty — 97% versus 98% filtered. Written that way the gap looks trivial, which is why the FDA cautions against reading high SPF numbers as proportionally better protection.

The gap stops being trivial once you account for application. Halve the dose and the effective protection of an SPF 50 drops into the twenties; do the same to an SPF 30 and you are in the low teens. On a long day outdoors, that is the difference between a pink neck and a burned one. SPF 30 versus SPF 50 works through the arithmetic, and how much sunscreen to apply gives the dose by body area.

One more label fact matters here. SPF measures UVB only. Protection against the UVA that drives photoaging comes from the *broad spectrum* claim, which is a separate test, so an SPF 50 without that phrase on the panel is an incomplete product. Every pick below carries it. What broad spectrum means explains the test.

What we looked for

  • SPF 50 or 50+ with a broad-spectrum claim, both read off the US actives panel.
  • Mineral filters wherever possible, which satisfies every reef-protection law and suits the ingredient-reading buyer this site is written for.
  • 80 minutes of water resistance on anything meant for water or sweat — the longest claim a US label may carry.
  • Enough volume to apply a genuine ounce and reapply from, because a small tube quietly trains you to ration.
  • A texture you will keep using. The best SPF 50 is the one still in the bag in August. Our methodology.

Is SPF higher than 50 worth buying?

Rarely. Above SPF 50 the additional UVB filtered is a fraction of a percent, while the price and the texture usually get worse. The FDA's proposed sunscreen rule would cap labeled values at SPF 60+ precisely because higher numbers mislead more than they help. The one honest argument for SPF 60 or 70 is the same under-application argument made above — but you get more real protection from applying an SPF 50 properly and reapplying it than from buying a bigger number and using it the same way.

SPF 50 for a face versus a body

Treat them as two purchases. Body SPF 50 can be thick and casty because nobody is looking closely at your shins, which is why the big mineral lotions win there. A face needs a formula you will wear daily under or instead of makeup, which usually means a smaller tube, a sheerer base and often a tint. The best sunscreen for your face covers that side, and the best mineral sunscreen for body the other.

If you want one bottle for both, a mineral lotion at SPF 50 will do the job — accept that it will read heavier on a face than a dedicated facial formula, and keep a stick in a pocket for reapplying over the day.

The reapplication rule that outranks the number

  1. Apply 15 minutes before going out, so the film has set before the first exposure.
  2. Use about an ounce for an adult body — a shot glass — and roughly a nickel-sized blob for a face and neck.
  3. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after toweling off, which ends water resistance whatever the label claimed.
  4. Reapply with a stick on faces, ears and partings, which is the only way most people will do it twice in a day.
  5. Cover what you can instead. A UPF 50+ shirt removes the torso from the job entirely. How UPF clothing works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SPF 50 sunscreen?

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral SPF 50+ — mineral filters only, fragrance-free, and the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance a US label may claim. It works on faces as well as bodies, which is unusual at this SPF.

Is SPF 50 much better than SPF 30?

At the tested dose the difference is 98% of UVB filtered versus 97%. The real-world difference is larger, because almost everyone applies a quarter to a half of the test dose and protection falls faster than the amount skipped.

Is SPF 100 worth buying?

Not usually. Above SPF 50 the extra UVB filtered is a fraction of a percent, and the FDA's proposed rule would cap labeled values at SPF 60+ because higher numbers overstate the benefit. Applying an SPF 50 properly beats buying a bigger number.

Does SPF 50 protect against UVA?

Only if the label also says broad spectrum. SPF measures UVB alone; UVA protection is a separate test. An SPF 50 without a broad-spectrum claim is an incomplete product.

How often do I reapply SPF 50?

Every two hours, and immediately after toweling off. The SPF number does not change the reapplication interval — water resistance is capped at 80 minutes and drying with a towel removes the film regardless.
