Thinkbaby vs Blue Lizard

Two zinc ranges that look interchangeable on the shelf and are not once you read the panel.

The short answer: Thinkbaby if you want a zinc-only panel and the easier spread; Blue Lizard if you want one filter system across baby, kids, sensitive, face and stick — plus a cap that changes color in UV and gets children to reapply. Both are SPF 50+, both claim the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance, and both are mineral. Neither is a compromise.

The one difference on the panel

Thinkbaby and Thinksport run on non-nano zinc oxide alone, at 20%. Blue Lizard's core mineral variants pair zinc oxide with titanium dioxide. Both combinations are mineral, both are broad spectrum, and both are accepted everywhere a reef-protection law applies.

What changes is the character of the film. Zinc covers the full UVA range on its own, which is why zinc-only formulas can be built at a high load without a second filter. Titanium dioxide is a strong UVB filter and a weaker UVA one, so it is usually there to do part of the work at a lighter visual cost. Zinc oxide versus titanium dioxide covers the mechanism; the practical upshot is that neither panel here is the weaker one, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling something.

If your reason for buying mineral is a short, legible panel — a common reason among parents of children with eczema — Thinkbaby's single active is the simpler thing to check. If your reason is the filter type rather than the count, the difference is immaterial.

Texture, which is what actually decides it

Both are thick. Thinkbaby spreads with noticeably less work for its zinc load, which matters when the application window is a toddler holding still for eleven seconds. Blue Lizard is stubborn, and it is distinctly harder over damp skin — reapplying to a wet child at a pool is the scenario where the difference is most obvious.

Both leave a cast, because that is what mineral filters do. Neither has a tinted option for children, so if cast is the obstacle, the answer is a different product category rather than a different one of these two: why mineral sunscreen leaves a white cast explains the physics, and mineral sunscreens that do not leave one covers the adult formulas that get closest.

The UV cap is a better feature than it sounds

Blue Lizard's cap contains a photochromic material that changes color in the presence of UV. It is not a dosimeter and it does not tell you how much UV there is — only that there is some. As a measuring instrument it is nothing. As a behavioral tool for a seven-year-old it works better than it has any right to, because it converts an abstract parental instruction into something visible on the table.

It earns its keep most on overcast days, which is exactly when families skip sunscreen and exactly when UV is still arriving. If reapplication is your household's failure point rather than the first application, that cap is worth more than any difference on the actives panel.

Range: one brand covers more of a household

Blue Lizard's core line runs the same filter approach across Baby, Kids, Sensitive, a face formula and a stick, so a family can standardize on one brand and still buy the right texture for each person. Thinkbaby's range is narrower but better separated by use: the baby lotion, the Thinksport version for adults and sport, a stick, and a sheer spray.

For most families the deciding question is which failure mode you are solving. A household that forgets to reapply wants the cap. A household that fights over texture wants the easier spread. The best sunscreen for kids sets both against the rest of the category, and spray versus stick versus lotion for kids covers the format question underneath it.

Price, and what you are paying for

Blue Lizard's core bottles usually sit below Thinkbaby's at the same SPF and the same water resistance, and both are firmly in drugstore territory rather than dermatology-counter territory. We do not quote figures in this text — the numbers beside each product are read from Amazon with the date attached, because a price typed into an article is stale the week after it is written.

The more useful way to think about cost is per application. A sunscreen is only working at the dose it was tested at, and the most expensive mistake in this category is rationing an expensive bottle. How much sunscreen to apply has the shot-glass arithmetic; whichever of these two you buy, buy enough of it that nobody is being careful with it.

Which to buy

  • Buy Thinkbaby if you want a zinc-only panel, you are managing eczema-prone or reactive skin, or spreading sunscreen on a wriggling child is the part of the day you dread. Our Thinkbaby and Thinksport review has the full range.
  • Buy Blue Lizard if you want one filter system for the whole family, you are buying for school-age children who need a reason to reapply, or you want the cheapest route to a mineral stick as well as a bottle. Our Blue Lizard review covers every variant.
  • Buy either if what you actually need is simply a mineral SPF 50 with 80 minutes of water resistance. On the two things that decide protection — filter type and labeled water resistance — these are the same product.
  • Buy neither if your child will not tolerate a visible white layer at all. That is a category problem, not a brand problem, and sunscreen for kids with eczema and sensitive skin covers the formulas that come closest to solving it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thinkbaby or Blue Lizard better?

Neither is better on protection: both are mineral, SPF 50+, and claim the maximum 80 minutes of water resistance. Thinkbaby has the zinc-only panel and the easier spread; Blue Lizard has the wider range and the UV-indicating cap.

Is Blue Lizard zinc only?

No. The core mineral variants pair zinc oxide with titanium dioxide. Both are mineral filters, so the range still satisfies reef-protection laws, but it is not a single-active panel like Thinkbaby's.

Which one leaves less white cast?

Both leave one. Thinkbaby blends in with less effort, which makes the cast easier to reduce, but neither range has a tinted option and neither disappears on deeper skin tones.

Can adults use Thinkbaby or Blue Lizard kids sunscreen?

Yes. There is no separate FDA category for children's sunscreen, so an adult can use either. Thinksport is simply the same Think formula marketed to adults.

Which is better for swimming?

They are tied on the label — both claim 80 minutes, which is the maximum a US sunscreen may claim. The deciding factor is reapplication after toweling off, where Blue Lizard's cap helps and Thinkbaby's easier spread over damp skin helps more.
